Feral Cat Coalition Clinic Procedures

Telephone Screening Checklist

  1. Should FCC get involved?
    1. Cats unowned?
    2. Feeder?
    3. Feeder will take cats back?
    4. 5 months old? Weekly Vets or Pet Assistance if younger.
    5. Legal access to property?
    6. Cats wild or tame? Relinquish cat for adoption? No collars!
    7. Planning to adopt cats out? Mandatory ear-tipping at clinics.
    8. Very young kittens?
    9. Anyone else we need to consult?
    10. Cats pregnant? Strongly encourage callers not to wait until kittens born.
    11. Emergency situation? Other vets/medical $ assistance from other agencies and FCC. Wants to purchase a trap?
    12. Clinic medical treatments and limitations. FCC needs donations/volunteers.
  2. If FCC should proceed, then always get:
    1. How heard of us — keep record — send with "Name/Address Collector."
    2. Caller name, address, home/work phone #s — Use "Screener Sanity Notes" sheet and "Name/Address Collector."
    3. Area of town (address of cats if different from above).
    4. Above data on other person with the cats.
    5. Number of cats and ages.
    6. Number of traps needed?
    7. Can caller trap and/or transport to clinic?
    8. Clinic date desired?
    9. Send "Humane Trapping Inst.," "Drop Off/Pick Up Inst." and other miscellaneous info to caretaker (if Trap Depot not involved).
  3. Inform caller about:
    1. Proper carriers (must be visible — no cardboard carriers).
    2. Instructions for trapping and drop-off.
    3. $35 per trap deposit.
    4. One cat per carrier.
    5. Cats fasted 12 hours.
  4. Reserve the following as needed:
  5. Traps
    1. Due back in 1 week (before next clinic).
    2. Trap Depot to call public or Trapper/Transporter.
    3. Trap Depot to make clinic reservations (tell # cats if different from # of traps).
  6. Trappers/Transporters
    1. Trapper/Transporter to call public.
    2. Screener or Trap Depot to make clinic reservation (not Trapper/Transporter).
    3. Screener to reserve traps in Trapper's name and contact Trapper/Transporter.
  7. Clinic Reservations
    1. Screener makes reservations if no Trap Depot involved.
    2. Call reservations in early.
    3. Public and volunteers never to call vets' offices for any reason.
